Aldi named UK’s cheapest supermarket – a whopping £69 less than Waitrose

  • Consumer outlet Which? has named Aldi the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the seventh consecutive month, based on its analysis of grocery prices.
  • A basket of 93 popular products at Aldi cost an average of £158.05 in July, making it £2.65 cheaper than its closest competitor, Lidl, and significantly less expensive than Waitrose, which was the dearest at £226.95.
  • Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco followed in the rankings, with less than £3 separating their prices for the same basket of goods.
  • The analysis highlighted the significant impact of loyalty cards, such as Nectar for Sainsbury’s and Clubcard for Tesco, which can reduce costs by up to £10, though millions of shoppers may be excluded from these schemes.
  • Amid ongoing inflation, Which? data indicates that the average household spent £5,530 on groceries over the 12 months to July 2026, marking a £156 increase compared to the previous year.
