Yes, he is.

The final challenge is called ‘Possible Futures’. In order to win it, players must navigate 25 rooms that are arranged in a square to reach the room that has the exit door. Progress is determined by dice rolls — the number that pops up on the dice determines the number of players that can move to the next room. Sounds simple? Well, there’s more.

The players only get 15 dice rolls to reach the exit. Each player also starts with 15 points — moving or waiting costs one point, and each room imposes an additional deduction of a random number of points. Not to mention, each participant must wear wristbands and collars. The wristbands need to be scanned to advance to the next room, while the collars are like ticking time bombs. If a player’s points drop to zero, the collar explodes, ending their life.

Additionally, each room has walls that display possible futures and multiple doors. Whichever door a player chooses to advance to the next room makes the possible future displayed on that wall their reality.

Before the final round, Arisu deliberately selects a room with an exit door that also shows the possible future of his death, but ensures life for everyone else. This grim future becomes more likely in the last round when Arisu rolls a seven on the dice, allowing seven of the eight remaining players to advance. Usagi realises that Arisu plans to sacrifice himself and refuses to leave. But Arisu urges Ryuji to force Usagi out and exit.

With the seven players safely through the exit door, Arisu prepares to accept his fate. However, he discovers that his sacrifice is part of a trap. Banda, a citizen of the Borderland, appears on a screen, revealing that the game is designed to keep him trapped there forever. Arisu then watches as Usagi and the other survivors are swept away by a mysterious flood.

It is important to note that Usagi ends up in the Borderland because, in the physical world, she is in a near-death (comatose) state in the hospital after being tricked by Ryuji.

Arisu is aided by Ann, who explains that the Borderland is a state experienced during near-death moments, and that he has only two minutes in the real world to bring Usagi back. Through the games, which unfold like days within the Borderland, Arisu must guide her to choose life again, giving her hope and ensuring she survives. The same applies to every other Borderland survivor: by winning the final games and choosing life over death, they can return to the real world.

After learning the truth from Banda, Arisu escapes and saves the remaining survivors from the mysterious flood. However, Usagi and Ryuji are carried away by the heavy currents. As Arisu follows to save them, he encounters the Watchman.

Arisu speculates that he might be the Joker, but the Watchman clarifies that the Joker is just a card that determines a player’s future.

As season 3 of the Netflix thriller drama reaches its climax, the story introduces a figure steeped in mythology. The Watchman presents himself as a guide between life and death, a Ferryman who guards the threshold separating the two worlds. Anyone who encounters him is offered a final choice that ultimately determines their fate.

What choice does the Watchman offer Arisu?

Before presenting Arisu with his last choice, the Watchman issues a warning: a catastrophe is about to occur in the real world, and even Arisu will not be able to stop it.

He then offers two options. Arisu can choose death and escape all suffering, or he can choose life, knowing he will eventually face death anyway.

Without hesitation, Arisu chooses life. He leaps back into the mysterious flood and saves Usagi. Meanwhile, Usagi dreams of her father one last time in the Borderland and receives encouragement to embrace life.

In the physical world, Arisu wakes up just before the two-minute limit expires. He then thanks Ann and rushes to the hospital to find Usagi. There, he discovers that she has regained consciousness.

Towards the end of the Netflix series, Arisu and Usagi return to their normal life, preparing for the arrival of their child.

At work as a counsellor, Arisu reconnects with some of the audience’s favourite Borderland players — Kuina, Aguni and Niragi — who are all now living their lives in the real world.

During his final counselling session with Chishiya, when Arisu asks, “What gives you a sense of purpose, meaning in life?” Chishiya replies, “Even if I don’t know, it’s not that important. Life can still be good.” This exchange ultimately encapsulates the show’s central theme: even amidst obscurity, life holds value and hope.

Season 3 concludes with earthquakes rattling Japan. Meanwhile, global news broadcasts reveal seismic disasters worldwide. Seems like the Watchman’s prophecy was no idle threat. The camera then pans away from Tokyo and takes viewers to an American diner. Soon, a waitress moves through the room, her face hidden and her nametag reading “Alice.”
