This Chinese New Year we are looking forward to celebrate by drinking a toast to the Ipoh born Michelle Yeoh as Malaysia's first Golden Globe award winner and in all likelihood an Oscar from Hollywood as well.
This Ipoh girl recently won the Kirk Douglas Film Award, a rare prize for any Asian star to date and of course the first by a Malaysian ever!
On January 11, 2023 at 9:00 AM (GMT+8) let's cheer for our very own Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) who is a favorite to win at the Golden Globes and an Oscar for Best Actress.
In fact, all forecasts say her road to the award podium is "smoother at the Globes since these awards split lead actresses into separate comedy/musical and drama categories."
At the Globe her main Oscar rival, Cate Blanchett (“TAR”), is in the dramatic category.
So at the Golden Globe, she has a greater chance of winning the Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress whereas Gold Derby says the odds are 31/10 based on combined predictions of thousands of their users.
According to Gold Derby.com, She is predicted: "to win by every single one of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets."
She’s helped by the fact that “Everything Everywhere” is the second most nominated film of the year with six bids and the most nominated film in this Best Actress category.
Besides, it is not just the number of nominations. Michelle Yeoh is also the only nominee whose film is nominated for writing and directing awards, showing that is far greater overall support for her film; "Everything..."
However, she has a contender for the award named Margot Robbie (“Babylon“), whose film has an equally impressive five nominations but all experts seem to say Michelle Yeoh has a better edge on her rival in this category at the Golden Globe.
By the way, if you have yet to see “Everything Everywhere All at Once” do so quickly before the Golden Globe Award night and judge for yourself whether you and I agree that Michelle Yeoh is our toast for the season, especially for this Chinese New Year 2023.
Here's to Michelle Yeoh our girl from the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus, Ipoh. Yum seng!
