We all love stories. We have been entertained with never ending stories through the decades. At each juncture, we have pondered whether that story which we have just heard or the video clip that was circulating is true. Cases of missing persons, aircrafts that never made it to their destinations, sexual offences and all these made many Malaysians ‘Sherlock Holmes’ of the country. The many turns and twists in each of the cases intrigue us and we have even more questions and many conclusions.
More than two thousand years ago, a story was told of a man who betrayed his master all for the love of money. The betrayer was in his master’s inner circle of friends. They spent most of the time together, doing good to the people around them. However, the master also had many who hated him for all the good that he had done. That good master was gaining too much popularity among the people of that land. He had become a threat to those who were in power then.
One day, the man who was also the group’s treasurer got ensnared by what he was entrusted with - money. His master’s enemies wanted to do away with his master once and for all. So, they made an offer of a sum of money to the treasurer. The temptation was there, the man could not reject such an offer. The deal was closed. At an appointed time, the betrayal took place and the master was ultimately killed. The story however ended with the betrayer committing suicide and throwing away his ill-gotten gains. His guilty conscience of betraying his master brought him to his unfortunate end.
As we recall the many stories that had emerged and many mysteries that remained unsolved, I wonder why. What makes man do the evil that we see? Are those stories that confound us also the result of threats and fears of powerful people? Are those who plot or scheme doing evil all for the love of money? May it not be so in our land. Let us all rebuild our nation on a firm foundation of truth, justice and peace.
