From wonton noodles made by a beloved Tanjong Rhu hawker stall to steamed putu piring rice cakes recognised by Michelin, check out these hawker stalls for the best food at Haig Road Food Centre.

The hawker centre was built in 1977 and currently houses 72 food stalls. The road was named after Douglas Haig, the commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force in France from 1915 to 1918. During British rule, the area was a coconut plantation and an Eurasian village.

Haig Road’s proximity to Geylang Serai, the cultural heartland of Singapore Malays, means the food centre brims with great Malay fare. Afandi Hawa & Family and HJ Waliti HJ Mazuki compete for the title of the best mee rebus and mee soto. Haig Road Putu Piring has grown from a roadside stall to a nationwide chain. Hajjah Jamillah Raj Mohamed is known for its legendary mee goreng, and people wait in line for Rosy & Nora’s roti John.

Other cuisines are not left out, either. After cooking at an upscale Chinese restaurant, Chef Chik set up a stall at Haig Road Food Centre to serve high-quality Cantonese dishes. Goody ‘N’ Jolly Laksa decamped from Marine Parade to sell laksa here. Zhenguang’s story is similar. Renowned for its wonton noodles at Hin Hollywood Canteen, the stall moved here after its previous home was demolished. Hougang Jing Jia offers Chinese-style mutton soup, and Lin Yu Mei presents two Sarawak specialities: laksa and kolo mee. Check them out below.

Haig Road Market and Food Centre is located at 14 Haig Rd, Singapore 430014.

Chef Chik

Chef Chik is the namesake business of Chik Ka Chung, a former head chef at Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant inside the Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. After a prison stint for corruption, he opened a stall with his wife and channelled his experience into serving restaurant-quality Cantonese food in a hawker centre. Using fresh seafood picked out daily at the market, Chik cooks dishes like steamed threadfin belly with a homemade sauce and garlic chee cheong fun with prawns. The double-boiled soups are also a draw.

Goody 'N' Jolly Laksa

Goody ‘N’ Jolly was a stall at Parkway Parade beloved for its Peranakan fare like mee rebus, mee siam, and laksa. After it closed, the owners moved the business to Haig Road, dropped most of its previous dishes except laksa, and added curry chicken. The laksa can be topped with prawns, cockles, shredded chicken, and tau pok, while the curry chicken is generously portioned.

Haig Road Putu Piring

Haig Road Putu Piring has been making steamed rice cakes the same way since 1985: rice flour filled with Grade 1 palm sugar, cooked in a mould, topped with freshly grated coconut tinged with salt, and served with a pandan leaf. The stall has various flavours at its other branches, but the Haig Road Food Centre location only sells the original.

Hollywood Canteen Zhenguang Wantan Noodles

For over five decades, wonton noodle fans flocked to Zhenguang at its first home at Hin Hollywood Canteen in Tanjong Rhu, right up to the day the eatery closed in 2011. Fortunately, the stall moved to Haig Road Food Centre and continues to make the dish the same way. The springy noodles are the hallmark, which the stall tosses in lard and dark soy sauce, and tops with lean slices of char siu.

Lin Yu Mei Sarawak Laksa & Kolo Mee

The two Sarawak sisters who run Lin Yu Mei harness their heritage into the dishes here. The first is the kolo mee, which is slicked with lard oil and laden with char siu and minced pork. The other is Sarawak laksa. Unlike the local version, which is richly flavoured with coconut milk, their variant is more delicate and served with bee hoon instead of yellow noodles.
