New Leeds United boss Sam Allardyce says he's spent his first days with the players trying to lift their confidence.

Allardyce admits he's leaned on assistant coach and former Leeds star Robbie Keane to improve the atmosphere.

He said: "I have tried to lighten the training somewhat - there is nobody better than Robbie Keane for that, by the way.

"He has got in amongst the players. He has joined in and done a bit of coaching with them.

"We have got Karl [Robinson], who is the same, so we have created a bit of an atmosphere in the way we like to work - making the training ground a nice place to come to.

"That doesn't feel like that with the results Leeds have had recently. It's been a bit doom and gloom and we have to try to lift that.

"We can do that to a certain degree, but the only way we lift that in the end is to start getting the results.

"We have to try to do that starting on Saturday because there are only four games left to try to survive in the Premier League."

On where he feels Leeds need to improve, Allardyce continued: "In possession I have always seen them to be very good, but out of possession recently has been, as everybody can see by the goals they have conceded, something that needed most of the work on.

"We have to balance the two. Carry on with the way you are playing in possession, creating openings, but make sure when you lose the ball you block off the openings. If you don't do that against Manchester City you are going to face big problems."

On facing Manchester City tomorrow, Allardyce also said: "I think Pep [Guardiola] is brilliant. He has done a huge amount for the Premier League since he's been here, when you see what he has achieved.

"Of course, he has had great backing. The recruitment they have done has been spot on, but also his management style over the years has been fabulous.

"We hope we can find a space or two to cause them some problems. We can't afford to miss any chances, we have to be ruthless and clinical and defensively the team will have to be the best it's been this season.

"Obviously, the defence has been a bit frail, but we will try to put this right."
