KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Police have arrested a husband and wife over a viral crash on the Federal Highway last month, with the man believed to have been behind the wheel of a Perodua Kembara now remanded for four days as investigators move closer to wrapping up the case.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said the pair, both in their 50s, were arrested by the district police’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at about 9pm yesterday.

“A remand application for both suspects was made today. The magistrate granted a four-day remand order for the male suspect until July 5, while his wife was released on police bail after her statement was recorded,” he said in a statement today.

“The investigation paper will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office in the near future for a decision on the case.”

The arrests mark the latest development in the investigation into the June 20 incident, which drew widespread attention after footage of the crash circulated online.

Police had previously appealed for help in tracing the driver of the Perodua Kembara, who allegedly fled after driving dangerously and causing the crash on the Federal Highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier investigations found the incident occurred at about 6.10pm as the sport utility vehicle was travelling from Shah Alam towards Kuala Lumpur. The vehicle was allegedly driven by a 59-year-old Malaysian.

Shamsudin urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Petaling Jaya district traffic investigators or visit the nearest police station to assist with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless and dangerous driving.
