Alpha IVF Group Records 84.4% ICSI Fertilisation Rate, Recognised by Malaysia Book of Records

Alpha IVF Group Berhad has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for achieving an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) fertilisation rate of 84.4%.

ICSI is an IVF procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into a mature egg to assist fertilisation. Fertilisation is an early stage of embryo development, and the number of successfully fertilised eggs can influence how many embryos are available for subsequent development, assessment and possible transfer.

The recognition was commemorated at an event titled “A Record in Science. A Celebration of Life.” at Sireh Junjung Hall, The Strand Mall, Kota Damansara. The event was attended by parents who had undergone IVF treatment at Alpha IVF, their families, referral partners, key opinion leaders, the Group’s Board of Directors and other stakeholders.

Her Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, also attended the event. Through the Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation (TAFF), she has supported efforts to raise awareness of and provide assistance for fertility treatment.

Dr Haris Hamzah, who was involved in Malaysia’s first IVF pregnancy, also attended and spoke about the early development of IVF and subsequent advances in the field.

Alpha IVF Group said one technique used in its laboratories is Piezo-ICSI, a form of ICSI that uses an ultra-fine, blunt-ended pipette and controlled piezoelectric pulses to introduce sperm into an egg. Conventional ICSI generally uses a sharp injection needle.

The company said its data showed that Piezo-ICSI produced 27% more blastocysts than conventional ICSI. Blastocysts are embryos that have developed for several days and may be considered for further assessment and transfer, depending on the treatment plan.

Alpha IVF Group introduced Piezo-ICSI at Alpha IVF Kuala Lumpur in 2014. It said the centre was the first in Malaysia and Southeast Asia to adopt the technology.

Adelle Lim Yun Xin, Group Scientific Director of Alpha IVF Group Berhad, said:

“Behind every IVF cycle is a couple holding on to the hope of bringing home a baby. We understand how precious every egg is and how much each opportunity matters.

“Achieving an 84.4% ICSI fertilisation rate is a milestone we are extremely proud of. However, our work does not stop here. We will continue to refine our techniques, advance our scientific capabilities and pursue even better outcomes. Ultimately, our greatest achievement is not the records we set, but the families we help create.”

Dato’ Dr Colin Lee, Group Managing Director of Alpha IVF Group Berhad, said:

“In IVF, every egg matters. This recognition reflects the importance of strengthening the earliest stages of the treatment journey, because the potential for pregnancy begins well before embryo transfer.

“It starts with protecting the eggs, supporting successful fertilisation, and developing and selecting embryos carefully. We are proud that this achievement reflects Alpha IVF’s commitment to combining advanced science with patient-centred care.

“We are not only celebrating a record; we are celebrating what it represents — creating more opportunities for couples pursuing parenthood.”

The Group said it would continue to invest in laboratory science, embryology expertise and patient care across the different stages of IVF treatment.
