Alsons advancing green projects as demand for power rises

ALSONS Consolidated Resources Inc. (ACR) said Friday that it was accelerating the development of renewable energy and battery energy storage (BESS) projects as power demand in Mindanao and across the country continues to rise.

The Alcantara-led firm said the move aimed to help address growing electricity requirements in the country, particularly in Mindanao, while supporting long-term economic expansion.

Citing data from National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, Alsons said power demand in Mindanao was projected to increase by 12.34 percent this year from 2025 levels amid expanding industrial activity and economic growth in the region.

Nationwide peak demand across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao has already exceeded 19,000 megawatts (MW) while Mindanao peak demand alone has surpassed 2,600 MW, the company said.

“As the economy grows, demand for reliable and sufficient power will continue to rise,” Antonio Miguel Alcantara, CEO of Alsons Power Group, said.

“Electricity remains essential in supporting industries, businesses, infrastructure and communities, while also helping attract investments,” he added.

Among ACR’s key projects are the proposed 75-megawatt alternating current (MWac) Bawing solar power plant in General Santos City and the 98.7-MWac SPPC solar facility in Sarangani province.

The SPPC project involves the conversion of a former diesel-fired power plant into a solar facility, which the company described as among the first conventional plants in the country to transition into renewable energy operations.

The project’s initial 45-MWac phase was among the winning projects under the government’s Green Energy Auction Program Round 4, securing an offtake agreement for the facility.

Alsons said it was also conducting feasibility and interconnection studies for additional solar and integrated battery energy storage systems across Mindanao and the Visayas.

The company is likewise studying hybrid technology and BESS projects for its conventional power plants in Zamboanga and Iligan to improve operational flexibility and competitiveness in the energy and reserve markets.

Apart from solar projects, Alsons expanded its renewable portfolio last year by switching on its 14.5-MW Siguil hydropower plant in Sarangani.

The company said it was also continuing to strengthen its participation in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, ancillary services and retail electricity supply business as it positions itself for long-term growth.

On Friday, Alsons Consolidated shares were unchanged at P0.76 each.
