Altercation in Genting Highlands result of misunderstanding, police confirm

POLICE have confirmed that an altercation, which went viral after being captured on video, was caused by a misunderstanding between a 15-year-old teenager and a 42-year-old man.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, prompted two separate reports, one made at 12.06 a.m. and the other at 12.37 a.m.

Bentong District Police Chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said preliminary investigations revealed no criminal elements in the dispute.

"It stemmed from a misunderstanding when the teenager mistakenly believed that the 42-year-old man was his own brother, based on his appearance and clothing," he explained in a statement on Saturday.

Both parties have provided their statements, and police have urged the public to refrain from making any speculative remarks that could hinder the investigation.

The viral video, which lasted 15 seconds, showed a confrontation between several individuals, and it is believed to have occurred at a shopping complex in Genting Highlands. - August 30, 2025
