For those who are unfamiliar, internships are part of the requirement for students who are aiming to complete their tertiary studies. The purpose of an internship is to ensure that the skills and knowledge learned in class can be applied in the workforce, and at the same time better prepare themselves for what’s to come after they’ve completed their studies. Unfortunately for this Malaysian, it seemed like his internship was in vain.

M’sian intern hired to clean office instead of doing actual work

Just recently, a 22-year-old Malaysian has taken his grouses onto an Instagram page called Malaysian Pay Gap. In his post, the man shared that he went to a small company to complete his internship. Unfortunately, his motivation and desire to learn and gain new exposure was quickly diminished as he was asked to clean the office instead of doing actual work.

“I was the only intern at the time and instead of photography work or anything related to media, they would make me sweep the floor and do other cleaning work instead”, he said.

He revealed that throughout his time with the company, he would be made fun of by his superior, constantly picking at him for not following the current fashion trends. He shared that his employer would often ask him to get a trendier haircut or dye his hair to their liking.

“They threatened to give me a bad review if I didn’t want to cut or dye my hair”, he mentioned.

Since then, he has reported his situation with his academic advisor and his academic advisor has made attempts to talk to his employer, but his employer refused to pick the call. As he resigns from his workplace, he expressed his dissatisfaction saying that he completely understood why the previous intern left without even resigning.
