An amendment to the Federal Constitution focusing on the rights and interests of the Orang Asli community is anticipated to be tabled by 2027 at the latest. Cameron Highlands MP Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor revealed that ongoing engagement with the Orang Asli community and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Perak, and Kedah has yielded positive feedback.

Ramli stated, "After the engagement process is completed, the matter will be brought to the Prime Minister and subsequently tabled in Parliament before the end of the 15th term." He shared this information during a gathering of Orang Asli village elders and heads of village development and safety committees.

The Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker highlighted that the proposed constitutional amendment involves two key areas. Firstly, it aims to place the duty of caring for the Orang Asli under the same schedule, ensuring that both the Federal and state governments share responsibility. This change is crucial as it addresses numerous issues related to land, forestry, and the welfare of the Orang Asli community.

Secondly, Ramli proposed an amendment to Article 153, which currently pertains to the interests of the Bumiputera communities in Sabah and Sarawak but excludes the Orang Asli. By including the Orang Asli in Article 153, the amendment seeks to rectify this exclusion and provide them with the same constitutional protections and benefits as other indigenous groups in Malaysia.

"The engagement process with the Orang Asli and NGOs has been encouraging, and we are confident that this amendment will bring about significant positive changes for the community," Ramli added.

The proposed amendment signifies a critical step towards ensuring that the Orang Asli community receives equal recognition and support from both Federal and state governments, ultimately improving their overall welfare and securing their rights more effectively. — Bernama
