Americans are exhausted and one generation is feeling it most

  • A CDC survey of approximately 27,000 U.S. adults found that 71.5 percent experienced fatigue on multiple days over a three-month period in 2024.
  • About one in six respondents reported feeling fatigued almost daily, with young adults aged 18 to 34 recording the highest rates at nearly 20 percent.
  • Women were more likely than men to report regular fatigue, while adults aged 65 and older reported the lowest rates at 12.9 percent.
  • The report defines fatigue as physical or mental exhaustion that does not improve with additional sleep or rest, distinguishing it from general sleepiness.
  • Adults experiencing regular fatigue were more than three times as likely to report depression symptoms and twice as likely to report anxiety or cognitive difficulties.
