The Trump administration has signalled it could support a temporary pause on the federal gas tax as Americans continue facing high fuel prices across the country. The proposal comes as national average gas prices remain above $4.50 per gallon, increasing financial pressure on households and drivers.

White House Signals Support for Gas Tax Relief

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the administration would support measures aimed at lowering fuel costs for Americans. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Wright said the administration was open to suspending the federal gas tax temporarily if it helped reduce prices at the pump.

The current federal gas tax adds just over 18 cents per gallon to gasoline prices and around 24 cents per gallon for diesel. According to AAA, the national average gas price reached around $4.52 per gallon this weekend.

If the tax were paused immediately, average gasoline prices would still remain above $4.30 per gallon nationwide.

Rising Fuel Prices Continue Hitting Households

Fuel costs have climbed sharply in recent months following instability in global oil markets linked to tensions involving Iran and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Higher gas prices have already forced many Americans to reduce spending, drive less and rethink travel plans during the busy summer season.

Lower-income households have been hit particularly hard as transportation costs consume a larger share of monthly budgets.

Officials Warn Prices Could Stay Elevated

President Donald Trump previously said rising gas prices would likely be temporary, reminds the New York Time. However, Wright acknowledged earlier this year that elevated fuel prices could continue for months even after tensions in the Middle East begin easing.

During Sunday’s interview, the Energy Secretary avoided making direct predictions about future oil or gasoline prices. He said energy prices couldstart falling once shipping traffic resumes normally through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains heavily disrupted by ongoing conflict in the region.

Debate Grows Over Federal Gas Tax Pause

Calls to suspend the federal gas tax regularly return during periods of high fuel prices. Supporters argue a temporary pause could provide immediate relief for drivers, while critics say the savings would remain relatively small compared with the overall increase in fuel costs.

The federal fuel tax also helps fund highways, road maintenance and transportation infrastructure projects across the United States.

Americans Continue Watching Fuel Prices Closely

With fuel prices remaining near yearly highs, many households are continuing to monitor costs carefully as summer travel demand increases. Any decision on pausing the federal gas tax would likely face political debate in Washington while drivers continue searching for relief from rising transportation expenses.
