Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, currently receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN), is showing signs of improvement, though medical professionals continue to monitor his condition closely. Dr. Mahathir, 99, was admitted to IJN on Tuesday afternoon due to a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), sparking concerns about his health.
According to his aide, Adam Mukhriz Mohd Muhayeddin, Dr. Mahathir’s health has stabilized, and his condition is progressing positively. “Alhamdulillah, Tun is getting better, but he still requires monitoring,” Adam said when contacted by Bernama, reassuring the public that the former prime minister is on the mend.
Dr. Mahathir's hospitalization, however, was due to a lung infection, which required immediate medical attention. Given his age, doctors are taking a cautious approach, ensuring that Dr. Mahathir remains under close observation to prevent any complications during his stay at the hospital.
As a result of Dr. Mahathir’s hospitalization, the ongoing defamation suit between him and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been postponed. The legal proceedings, which were set to continue at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on October 17 and 18, have now been rescheduled to later dates.
The defamation case stems from accusations exchanged between Dr. Mahathir and Zahid over the years, intensifying political tensions. Dr. Mahathir’s legal team, led by lawyer Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi, informed the court that Dr. Mahathir has been granted medical leave until October 25 due to his current health condition. In light of this, the court agreed to vacate the hearings scheduled for October 17 and 18.
Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong has rescheduled the continuation of the trial to October 29 and 30, with additional hearing dates set for December 5, 6, and 9. These new dates will allow time for Dr. Mahathir to recover and return to court.
