Congress workers, led by former MP Jasbir Singh Gill, aka Dimpa, staged a protest against the “high-handedness” of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the registration of “false” police cases against party workers.
The protesters took out a march, raising slogans against the state government before ending their demonstration at Verka Chowk here.
Addressing the gathering, Dimpa accused the AAP government of misusing state machinery to target opposition workers while failing to address the basic problems faced by the people of Punjab. He alleged that the government was looting Punjab’s resources and neglecting public welfare.
He said residents were struggling to get basic civic amenities despite the Amritsar East constituency being represented by both an MLA and a Mayor from the ruling party. He said heaps of garbage could be seen in many parts of the constituency, creating inconvenience for residents.
Dimpa also expressed concern over the drinking water situation, alleging many people were being forced to consume contaminated water. He warned that the holy city could face a sanitation crisis if immediate corrective measures were not taken.
Highlighting the city’s importance as a major religious and tourist destination, he said its economy largely depended on tourism, but lacked adequate civic infrastructure and services. District Congress Committee president Saurav Mithu Madan also addressed the gathering and criticised the state government over various public issues.
