PENANG: A durian-themed hotel by former Hong Kong actress Amy Yip is set to open in Penang in 2027, highlighting Malaysia’s iconic fruit and tourism appeal.

The 59-year-old said the project has been delayed from its initial timeline to allow for improvements to its design and concept.

“I’m very happy. Operating a hotel is a long-term endeavour that requires a lot of time and learning,” she said, adding that she hopes to develop it into a five-star property.

Yip, who owns The Leith boutique hotel in Penang, said the new venture reflects her appreciation for Malaysia’s tourism industry and durian culture.

Director Jack Neo, who serves as creative director, said elements from his film The King of Musang King (2023) will be incorporated into the hotel’s design.

The development, located at the former Towne House Hotel site, is expected to feature durian-inspired architecture, themed dining and cultural experiences, including exhibitions and visits to local farms.
