The rules of riding in an elevator are often unclear to many people. Are you supposed to hold the door? Should you speak to fellow passengers or not make eye contact?

For some, riding in an elevator can be a stressful situation, due to claustrophobia, a fear of heights, and social anxiety.

Recently, a signage in a lift in a building of a public university went viral for one of its rules. Amongst rules such as to maintain a distance from others and to wear face masks, the rules went above and beyond by stating that its passengers should not engage in conversation whilst inside.

“Maybe there’s an exam in the lift”

The signage has since gone viral on Twitter. Netizens took to the comments section to express their amusement over the bizarre ruling whilst some made hilarious suggestions on why the rule was implemented.

“Our voices could slow down the movement of the lift.”

“When too many people are talking, the lift might not be able to focus and stop at the required floor,” said a user.

Meanwhile, some users said that it might actually be a good idea. “Please normalise this! Sometimes in the morning when it is crowded, they want to talk in the lift. Even worse when their mouth smells.”
