The by-election held on 11th May 2024 in Kuala Kubu Baharu has ignited significant interest and analysis within the political sphere.
With a total of 40,226 registered voters, the voter turnout stood at 61.5%, totaling 24,652 individuals exercising their democratic right.

The electoral landscape revealed the following results:
- Pang Sock Tao (PH): 14,000 votes
- Khairul Azhari Saut (PN): 10,131 votes
- Hafizah Zainudin (PRM): 152 votes
- Nyau Ke Xin (Independent): 188 votes
The majority margin stood at 3,869 votes (15.8%), with PH leading PN by a ratio of 35% to 25% against total voters.
Comparing the current by-election to the previous state election shows a status quo, with no major shifts in the political landscape. Racial voting patterns remained unchanged, with PH maintaining support from the Chinese, Indian, and Orang Asli communities, while PN continued to enjoy backing primarily from the Malay demographic.
Interestingly, early voting among the police and military forces tilted in favor of PH, indicating a sway in support towards the ruling Unity Government.
However, both PRM and the independent candidates failed to make a significant impact, losing their deposits in the process. This outcome underscores the challenges faced by minor parties and independents in navigating the formidable campaign machinery and extensive national resources deployed and centred during by-elections.
Moving forward, it is imperative for PKR and Umno to intensify efforts to penetrate Malay-dominated areas to garner support for PH in the Unity Government. Despite minimal campaigning by PAS, the Malay voting trend towards PN remained steadfast, albeit with lower turnout compared to non-Malay voters.
PAS's rhetoric on race and religion may have minimized protest votes and non turnouts of non-Malay electorates.
Breaking the political barriers in mixed semi-urban constituencies remains a formidable challenge for PN, as voters increasingly prioritize unity over divisive narratives based on race and religion. As such, the by-election in Kuala Kubu Baharu serves as a micro landscape of the complex interplay between ethnicity, ideology, and electoral dynamics in Malaysia's political scene.
