Andy Burnham’s plan for 100 new mental health centres explained

  • The government has announced plans to open new 100 mental health centres across England, located in local libraries, banks, and other high street premises.
  • These community centres will offer walk-in support, allowing members of the public to access help without needing a medical referral, aiming to provide earlier, closer-to-home care.
  • Additionally, 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments will be created, ensuring individuals experiencing a mental health crisis receive specialist care in a calm environment, rather than in overcrowded general A&Es.
  • Prime minister Andy Burnham described the new centres as a "lifeline" for thousands of patients currently facing long waits for mental health support.
  • Backed by £343 million, the initiative will see the first sites open in autumn this year, with further facilities planned from March 2027, as part of a broader Mental Health Strategy.
