Andy Burnham to invest £8.4bn into new UK nuclear submarines

  • Andy Burnham is expected to announce an £8.4bn investment for the UK's next generation of nuclear submarines, the Dreadnought-class.
  • These nuclear-armed vessels will replace the current Vanguard-class, capable of launching Trident 2 D5 ballistic missiles, and will be powered by a Rolls-Royce nuclear propulsion system.
  • The funding will primarily support the progress of HMS Dreadnought, the first of four new submarines, towards readiness, and advance the second vessel, HMS Valiant, to sea trials.
  • The investment aims to protect Britain and create 47,000 jobs and apprenticeships across the UK, with £5.9bn allocated to BAE Systems and £2.5bn to the wider supply chain.
  • The announcement also highlights the government's commitment to reindustrialising Britain and tackling youth joblessness, amidst ongoing discussions about defence spending targets.
