A woman’s joyous return home to Johor after celebrating Chinese New Year took a devastating turn when she discovered that her hard-earned angpao cash had been stolen.

The victim, who shared her distressing experience on Xiaohongshu, titled her post, 'I have become a thief’s God of Prosperity on CNY Day 7,' warning fellow travelers to stay vigilant when using public transportation."

The incident unfolded when she took a bus from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru. Upon reaching home, she found that her luggage zipper had been tampered with. While her clothes and red packets appeared untouched, a horrifying realization struck her that every single banknote inside was gone.

“I was devastated as this was all my Chinese New Year angpao money from my parents, relatives, colleagues, and even my year-end bonus, which was in Singapore dollars,” she lamented with sadness. After a rough calculation, she estimated her losses at RM4,000, leaving her devastated.

Bus Ride Turns into a Nightmare

The woman suspects foul play involving the bus crew. She recalled how the driver had been unusually eager to store her luggage in the compartment.

Throughout the journey, the bus made two stops ie. one at a petrol station for about 10 minutes and another at a rest stop for 20 minutes. “To pry open the zipper, rummage through the suitcase, open each red envelope, and remove the cash inside would take at least five minutes. I doubt another passenger could have done it unnoticed,” she explained.

Apathy from Authorities

In hopes of seeking justice, she took her damaged luggage to a police station and lodged a report. However, she claimed the officers showed little concern.

“They seemed indifferent: maybe they thought RM4,000 wasn’t a big enough sum. They told me there was no evidence to investigate and even asked what I expected them to do,” she wrote in frustration.

Hope the police authorities will take swift action to investigate this case following this viral post.

A Cautionary Tale for Travelers

This incident serves as a stark reminder for travelers to be extra careful. The woman concluded her post by advising others never to store valuables or cash in checked luggage.

This case also raises concerns over lax security in long-haul bus services, especially regarding luggage storage. With bus travel remaining a popular mode of transportation in Malaysia, stricter measures, such as CCTV surveillance and better security protocols, may be needed to prevent similar thefts in the future.

For now, this woman’s misfortune serves as a costly lesson: in the world of travel, vigilance is key, and trusting luggage compartments with valuable items might just turn you into a thief’s unexpected benefactor.
