PENAMPANG: Joggers unhappy over the recent closure of part of Tun Fuad Park to facilitate its transformation into a Botanical garden in two years have been dismantling barricades that have been put up there.

“They brought down the barricades in angry manner,” said a witness.

According to DBKK Landscape Department Director Rozie Khan Halik, the barricades were erected following the official handover of the site to the appointed contractor for the re-construction of the area into a RM20 million botanical park.

“We do not want anyone to enter the premise as of now as it will interfere the work. I heard reports there are still people going there for their jog. By right it is not allowed,” she said.

James, a frequent jogger who witnessed the incident, said they were avid joggers who were always there for their daily routine.

“They continue coming despite the notice of closure. I am just wondering if there will be a fee imposed when the botanical garden is open to public,” he said.

Mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip had said leisure activities at the 44.13-hectare park had been temporarily halted for safety reasons and to ensure smooth implementation of the project.

However, the Dewan Putra and Kampung Nelayan and Lake View restaurants were still open to the public.

She also said that when completed, it would become one of the city’s newest attractions and the public would not be charged.
