Apprehending misinterpretation of Supreme Court guidelines regarding community dogs, members of the Animal Protection and Welfare Society held a meeting at Omaxe Club to raise awareness among residents on legal provisions related to stray dogs and animal welfare.

The speakers expressed concern the recent DC directions were being misunderstood, leading to incidents of violence against community dogs in some areas. They clarified the court had not permitted any citizen to harm or remove dogs at will. Any action against a dog can be taken only as per legal provisions and prescribed procedures.

The participants said declaring a dog “aggressive” was not the right of an individual. Such a determination can only be made by veterinary experts after scientific examination. They said the opinions of a few residents can’t be the sole basis for labelling a dog as dangerous.

The society highlighted the SC had emphasised scientific management of community dogs through sterilisation and vaccination under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules. It was pointed out feeding community dogs was a legally protected activity and feeders play an important role in keeping dogs calm and cared for.

Appealing to the residents to avoid misinformation, the society urged people to treat community dogs humanely and contact the municipal corporation or recognised animal welfare organisations in case of any issues. It maintained cruelty towards community dogs was inhuman and a violation of the law.
