TAWAU: Another Borneo pygmy elephant has been found killed and decapitated in Sabah’s east coast—this time in the Tibow area near Tawau.
The grisly discovery mirrors a similar case reported in January along the Kalabakan-Sapulut road, fuelling fears of a recurring pattern and possible links to organised poaching.
Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar confirmed the latest incident, saying the department was alerted on Thursday.
"Our team has gone to the site and launched an investigation. We are also looking at whether this could be connected to earlier cases. In the meantime, joint enforcement operations like roadblocks will be set up at several strategic locations,” he said.
In the January case, the elephant’s head and limbs had been severed, though no arrests have been made since.
