Kota Kinabalu: Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Ex-Students Association (Ansara) targets to collect more than 300 blood bags during a three-day Annual SeMalaysia 18th Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation Campaign 2024.

Organising Chairman Kadir Abdullah Damsal said the activity would take place simultaneously throughout country.

“We target 5,000 blood bags for all states nationwide.

“This is our hope, and our goal is to help the blood bank to overcome its lack of blood supply, especially during the holidays, festivals and fasting month.

“We hope this effort for the 18th year can have an impact and bring more blood donors to save lives,” he said when opening the campaign here.

Kadir said the blood bank needs to be replenished to help thalassaemia patients, accident patients and blood loss cases.

“Thalassaemia in Sabah is one of the highest and in need of frequent transfusions from time to time on a weekly or monthly basis.

“Apart from that, cancer patients, premature babies and many other patients also need blood transfusion medicine in order to survive,” he said.

The programme was officiated by University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) Chancellor Datuk Dr Yaakub Johari.

Dr Yaakub said MRSM alumni, especially, are always committed to continue blood donation programmes because many of them become health service staff.

“A lot of our alumni become doctors and others, I myself was among the first batch and my children also studied at MRSM before this.

“It is the time now for us to contribute, serve and help the community.

“Thus, we would like to send the message of how important it is for us, as human beings, to first embrace the nature of loving and being generous to others.

“Through blood donation, we can instil good values because we know the idea is aimed at helping those in need and saving lives.

“At the same time, this will become a solid foundation in a human being, before we talk about more issues at large, for example creating a caring society and others.” he said.

He also said the campaign would help replenish blood banks of three hospitals – Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Likas Women and Children Hospital and Kudat Hospital.

“Hopefully we will be able to collect blood supplies from our donors through this campaign and the goal to collect more than 300 blood bags will be met,” he said.

Also present was Likas Women and Children Hospital (HWKKL) Transfusion Medicine specialist Dr Jamaludin Mail.
