Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary-general Anthony Loke has pledged a significant restructuring of the party’s leadership if he secures re-election in the upcoming party polls on Sunday.

Loke, who also serves as Malaysia’s transport minister, emphasized the need for fresh strategies to navigate the challenges of DAP’s second term in government. He assured that while leadership renewal is necessary, the changes would not target any specific individual or position.

“We must continuously embrace change. A major reshuffle and leadership rejuvenation are inevitable, but this does not mean sidelining anyone,” Loke stated during an interview at the party headquarters. “Instead, it is about ensuring that different leaders assume different roles at different times.”

He expressed confidence that party leaders would support these changes, recognizing the importance of adapting to new challenges. According to Loke, evolving leadership responsibilities are crucial to the party’s long-term success.

“Everyone has their role, but at different times, they must take on different responsibilities. I believe all leaders will understand this necessity,” he added.

However, Loke acknowledged that his vision for a revamped leadership would only be realized if he wins re-election, as the restructuring depends on the leadership contest’s outcome.

Despite DAP’s strong presence with over 100 elected representatives, Loke cautioned against complacency, urging the party to remain proactive in its growth and governance strategies.

Reports also surfaced that Loke had recently met with DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng on March 7, in an attempt to persuade him against defending his chairman post while remaining a member of the central executive committee (CEC). Although he confirmed the meeting, Loke remained reserved about whether he had directly requested Lim to step aside.

During the interview, Loke reiterated that the leadership election should focus on the party’s future rather than being centered around one individual.

“It would be unfair to make this election solely about Lim. The party election is about DAP as a whole—its direction, challenges, and how we prepare for the future,” he stated.

As the party polls approach, all eyes will be on DAP’s internal reshuffle and whether Loke’s leadership vision gains the support needed for implementation.
