Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has rebuffed mounting criticism from former premiers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over Malaysia’s newly signed trade pact with the United States, describing their remarks as politically driven rather than grounded in fact.

Speaking after the first day of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea, Anwar said the government had already provided comprehensive clarifications in Parliament through Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He emphasised that the agreement was part of Malaysia’s long-term strategy to secure high-value investments, enhance competitiveness, and expand technological cooperation.

According to Anwar, Malaysia’s balanced and pragmatic foreign policy had received positive feedback in global economic forums, including APEC, where the country was recognised for maintaining constructive ties with both Western and Asian economies. He suggested that the continued criticism from political rivals reflected partisan motives rather than genuine concern for the nation’s interests.

“If certain individuals insist on continuing their attacks, it is clearly a matter of political consideration,” he said, adding that the trade deal was crafted with Malaysia’s economic resilience and future generations in mind.

Muhyiddin had earlier claimed that the agreement contained “vague provisions and time bombs” that could jeopardise national sovereignty, while Mahathir alleged that the deal risked compromising Malaysia’s independence by aligning too closely with US interests. Opposition leaders have also questioned a clause requiring Malaysia to comply with restrictions imposed by Washington on countries deemed a threat to its economic or national security.

Anwar, however, dismissed these arguments, suggesting that Mahathir’s comments were likely based on incomplete or inaccurate briefings. He implied that the nonagenarian statesman was unlikely to have personally examined the document in detail.

Commenting on Muhyiddin’s criticism, Anwar appeared more restrained, saying he understood the Bersatu president’s preoccupation with his party’s internal challenges. Nonetheless, he reiterated that Malaysia must focus on attracting high-technology investments and integrating artificial intelligence into its economic ecosystem to remain competitive in the global market.

“It makes no difference whether investments come from American, Chinese, or Korean firms,” he said, stressing that Malaysia’s goal was to ensure the prosperity of its younger generation. He urged political leaders to adopt patience and wisdom rather than divisive rhetoric, warning that endless political quarrels could undermine the country’s economic progress and international credibility.
