As we reflect upon Malaysia's tumultuous journey over the last 25 years, it is impossible to ignore the seismic shifts that have defined its political landscape.

The period from September 2, 1998, to September 4, 2023, paints a picture of political intrigue, corruption, and economic ups and downs that have left the nation grappling with its identity and future.

The catalyst for this rollercoaster ride was undoubtedly the dramatic sacking of Anwar Ibrahim from UMNO and his subsequent removal from the Deputy Prime Minister's positionthen-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1998.

This event marked the birth of the Reformasi movement and the formation of PKR, as Anwar vowed to fight against corruption and cronyism. Popular opinion rallied behind him, viewing him as a symbol of hope for a more transparent and just Malaysia.

The economic backdrop during this time was equally tumultuous. The Malaysian Ringgit was pegged to the US dollar at 3.80, a measure taken to stabilize the country's economy during the Asian financial crisis. However, this move had long-term implications for Malaysia's economic flexibility and competitiveness.

Fast forward to 2023, and the nation finds itself in a vastly different scenario. Anwar Ibrahim is now the Prime Minister, a remarkable turnaround in his political career.

However, his ascent to power is accompanied by allegations of political maneuvering in the case of Zahid Hamidi, his deputy, who managed to escape 47 charges of corruption with a Discharge Not Amounting to Acquittal (DNAA) after two years in court. Anwar has denied any involvement in Zahid's escape, but popular opinion suggests otherwise, casting a shadow over his leadership.

The economic landscape has also shifted, with the Ringgit now standing at 4.60 to the US dollar. This depreciation raises concerns about Malaysia's economic stability and the impact it may have on the lives of its citizens.

What these 25 years reveal is a Malaysia caught in a cycle of political intrigue, corruption allegations, and economic instability.

While Anwar's rise to power may symbolize change and hope for many, the cloud of suspicion surrounding his leadership and the ongoing economic challenges underscore the complexity of the nation's path forward.

Malaysia needs a sustained commitment to transparency, accountability, and economic reform to break free from this rollercoaster ride of uncertainty.

It's crucial that the nation's leaders prioritize the interests of the people over political manoeuvring and that the voices of the citizens are heard and respected. Only then can Malaysia hope to chart a more stable and prosperous course for its future.
