KUALA LUMPUR – After a quarter of a century, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will set foot in Umno’s headquarters tonight at Menara Dato’ Onn for a meeting of the unity government secretariat.
According to Berita Harian, the prime minister will chair the meeting, which is the secretariat’s first since the unity government that includes his former foe Barisan Nasional (BN) was formed.
However, BN and Umno were once Anwar’s “home” as it was where he began his political career until his sacking from the party and government in 1998 during the Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad administration.
Berita Harian reported a secretariat member as saying that the meeting will be held at 8.30pm and will also be attended by Umno and BN’s top leaders who are in the unity government.
This includes Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is Anwar’s deputy prime minister.
Besides Pakatan Harapan and BN, other components of the unity government are Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, and Warisan.
Zahid had announced previously that the unity government secretariat would be headed by Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who is currently outgoing Umno Youth chief, as the party is holding elections. – The Vibes, February 7, 2023
