As whispers turned into headlines, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim chose silence over confirmation when asked directly about Rafizi Ramli’s resignation from the Cabinet. The moment unfolded at the conclusion of the ASEAN Auditors Conference 2025 in Putrajaya, where Anwar deflected the question by challenging the source of the news itself—just moments before the former Economy Minister made his intentions official.

The atmosphere had been thick with speculation ever since Rafizi lost his bid to retain the PKR deputy presidency. Weeks before the party election results, he had hinted at the possibility of stepping down, suggesting that change might be on the horizon should his internal party standing falter. That comment, cryptic at the time, has now become a reality.

While the Prime Minister avoided confirming anything publicly at the event, government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil later acknowledged that no formal resignation letter had been received at that point. Nevertheless, Rafizi has now set a clear date—his resignation will take effect on June 17.

Appointed in December 2022 as Economy Minister, Rafizi had entered the Cabinet during a pivotal moment in Malaysia’s post-election restructuring. His time in office, although relatively short, was marked by a commitment to accountability, a principle he emphasized again when explaining his decision to step aside. He viewed resignation not as retreat but as a recognition of democratic outcomes and the need to honor the public mandate.

Responses to his exit have varied. Some political figures see the move as a predictable outcome of his declining influence within the party, interpreting it as a personal acknowledgment of defeat. Others, including Subang MP Wong Chen, view the decision as a testament to Rafizi’s integrity—keeping a promise made in advance of the results and bowing out with dignity.

Interestingly, Wong himself also faced a setback in the same round of PKR internal elections, yet remains vocal in his support for the party’s leadership and unity.

Rafizi’s departure, coming so closely after that of Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, signals a significant shift within the Cabinet’s power structure. With key reformists exiting their roles, questions are mounting about how Prime Minister Anwar will recalibrate his team—and whether other changes may soon follow.
