MALAYSIA'S Prime Minister arrived in Sabah on Saturday for a packed two-day working visit, beginning his programme with a morning walkabout and breakfast with the local community at Gaya Street Market before attending the Rancakkan MADANI Sabah event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Later in the day, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to deliver a presidential address to party leaders as part of preparations for Sabah’s 17th state election, followed by a special meeting between the Central Leadership Council and Sabah state leaders.
His final engagement for the day was a public rally and announcement of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidates for the upcoming election.
Anwar will continue his visit to Tawau on Sunday.
Earlier, Anwar urged federal and state leaders to work together to strengthen Malaysia’s economy and global standing, stressing that political stability and cooperation are essential for progress.
Speaking at a meet-and-greet session with Sabah industry associations last night, Anwar said Malaysia’s future prosperity depends on its ability to foster peace and build productive international partnerships.
“My focus is to ensure the success of this country as a great nation with economic strength. This is crucial. Fundamentally, we are a peaceful country that maintains good relations with all nations,” he said.
“Some criticise me for being too close to China or the United States. I do not mind criticism because my priority is Malaysia’s growth and standing. To succeed economically, we must maintain friendships with all,” he added.
Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s diplomatic success at the recent 47th ASEAN Summit, which brought together all 11 ASEAN member states and major powers such as the United States and China. “Malaysia is an independent nation. I represent this country and my decisions must protect the interests of our people and economy,” he said.
He stressed that peace and stability are essential foundations for business growth, warning that political discord at either the federal or state level could harm the country. “As Prime Minister, I will not tolerate such behaviour.
“The power entrusted to us must be used to govern responsibly and safeguard our citizens,” he said.
Anwar also called on Sabah’s leaders to cooperate closely with the federal government to ensure inclusive and effective economic development for the state. “I want all leaders to cooperate, represent Sabah’s aspirations and focus on economic progress,” he said, adding that unity between both levels of government is vital for driving national prosperity. - November 9, 2025
