Malaysians Abroad Deserve Equal Voting Rights, Says Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysians residing overseas should have the same opportunity to vote as those living within the country, emphasized Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking to members of the Malaysian diaspora in Belgium, Anwar stated that he had brought up the matter of postal voting for overseas Malaysians with the Election Commission (EC).

The EC is an independent body, but I have raised this issue with them. Every Malaysian must have the opportunity to vote, Anwar said during a gathering attended by around 200 Malaysians abroad.

Addressing concerns about the challenges faced by overseas Malaysians in participating in elections, Anwar suggested streamlining the voting process. I even proposed that voting should not necessarily go through embassies. A more efficient mechanism should be adopted to allow everyone to vote, even if additional funding is required, he explained, adding that the EC appeared receptive to his recommendations.

Anwar made these remarks during his two-day working visit to Belgium, which began on January 19. His statements highlight the government’s recognition of the importance of inclusive electoral processes and its commitment to ensuring that all Malaysians, regardless of location, can exercise their democratic rights.

Commitment to Green Technology and Education

When questioned about Malaysia’s focus on green technology and forest preservation, Anwar reaffirmed the government's commitment to environmental sustainability. He pointed out that while European nations have largely depleted their forests, Malaysia has maintained a significant forest cover of 54%.

Our green lungs have expanded, and as part of our forestation campaign, we planted one million trees last year, he said. Anwar also emphasized Malaysia's collaboration with ASEAN partners on renewable energy projects, such as the ASEAN grid, which harnesses hydropower, solar, and other sustainable sources.

On education, the Prime Minister highlighted Malaysia's growing reputation as a hub for international students. We currently have 140,000 foreign students in our universities. Many leaders from developing countries express interest in sending their students and officials to Malaysia to gain expertise in fields like semiconductors, he noted.

To improve Malaysia’s educational standards, Anwar revealed that the government is working closely with industries to align academic programs with market demands. New disciplines and technologies must be embraced to meet the evolving needs of the global economy, he added.

Anwar’s remarks underline his administration’s dedication to addressing global challenges, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing Malaysia's position as a leader in education and innovation. These initiatives aim to foster growth and inclusivity for both Malaysians at home and abroad.
