Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has responded to criticisms surrounding his decision to present the royal addendum regarding Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s pardon to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for consideration. Addressing detractors, Anwar stated that many who question his actions lack understanding and are uninterested in uncovering the truth.

Speaking at the launch of the FLYsiswa Carnival and MADANI Student Transportation Carnival at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Shah Alam, Anwar emphasized that the right to seek a pardon applies to everyone, including those serving prison sentences.

“As someone who has experienced imprisonment, I firmly believe that all individuals, without exception, are entitled to appeal for a pardon regarding their sentences,” he remarked. Reflecting on his own incarceration, Anwar recounted being imprisoned during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration and later under Najib’s government.

“Despite my past experiences, I harbor no grudges or envy. Now, as prime minister, I ensure justice is upheld for everyone,” he added.

Anwar elaborated that when Najib’s pardon appeal was not included in the agenda for discussion during the Pardons Board meeting, he took the initiative to submit the matter directly to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. “I wanted the appeal to be reviewed fairly and thoroughly by His Majesty,” he explained.

The prime minister also addressed allegations that he was attempting to hide the truth about the royal addendum by refusing to comment on the issue earlier. He clarified that his silence was a matter of principle, aimed at respecting the ongoing legal proceedings in court.

Critics have accused Anwar of shielding Najib from scrutiny, but he stressed that his actions were guided by legal and procedural norms rather than personal or political motives.

The controversy surrounding Najib’s pardon stems from his ongoing legal battles. On January 6, 2025, the Court of Appeal is set to hear Najib’s challenge against the High Court’s decision to deny his application for leave to appeal. The former prime minister’s legal team has filed a notice of motion to present additional evidence, including the royal addendum, as part of his case.

In his speech, Anwar underscored his impartiality in handling the matter. “This is not about favoritism but about adhering to the legal framework that guarantees everyone the right to appeal,” he reiterated.

The developments in Najib’s legal saga and the royal addendum issue continue to draw public attention. As the date for the Court of Appeal hearing approaches, the prime minister’s stance highlights his effort to balance legal responsibility with political accountability, ensuring transparency in the process.

For Anwar, the focus remains on fostering a governance style rooted in fairness and respect for the rule of law—a message he emphasized strongly during his address to the student audience at UiTM.
