Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reinforced Malaysia’s stance on the ongoing Middle East conflict, asserting that the country, as a sovereign and independent nation, has the right to voice its position on global matters—including the escalating war between Israel and Iran.
During an address in Kuching, Sarawak, Anwar voiced concern over Israel’s continued aggression, stating that Tehran’s retaliation was a justifiable response. While acknowledging Iran’s right to defend itself, he simultaneously called for the restoration of peace, protection of human life, and an immediate halt to the violence.
He stressed that the wider implications of this conflict, particularly external interference—especially by the United States—had only worsened the situation. Anwar pointed to the global economic risk, warning that a closure of the Strait of Hormuz would severely impact international trade and energy markets.
Referring to Malaysia’s position, Anwar noted that remaining silent in the face of injustice and civilian casualties would be incompatible with the country's principles. He reiterated that Malaysia must stand firmly for human rights, even in matters involving powerful international actors.
The hostilities intensified after Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure on June 13. In response, Iran launched missiles targeting strategic locations in Israel. The conflict, which has now entered its second week, continues to escalate with no immediate sign of resolution.
According to figures reported by Reuters, the violence has resulted in at least 430 fatalities and 3,500 injuries in Iran, while Israel has reported 24 civilian deaths and more than 1,200 injuries. The United States recently joined the conflict, striking Iranian nuclear facilities—actions justified by President Donald Trump as necessary to neutralise Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Israel has claimed that its military operations have delayed Iran’s nuclear development by two to three years. Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear programme is focused solely on peaceful objectives.
While reaffirming Malaysia’s support for justice and sovereignty, Anwar cautioned against militaristic solutions, emphasizing that further escalation would only bring suffering and destabilize the region. He called on all parties to pursue diplomacy and uphold international law to avoid deeper humanitarian crises.
