Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has addressed a wave of criticism aimed at his administration, defending his decisions to forgo his salary and implement cost-saving measures during official trips abroad. Speaking at the second anniversary of the Madani government, Anwar expressed frustration over what he described as misplaced priorities in political discourse.

Salary Sacrifice Sparks Controversy

Anwar responded to allegations from Opposition leader Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who accused him of acting "holier-than-thou" by rejecting his prime ministerial salary. Anwar clarified that while he does not accept a salary for his roles as prime minister and finance minister, he continues to receive a parliamentary allowance, as does his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“I’m not poor. We manage with our allowances. Yet, when I forgo my salary, I am ridiculed. Perhaps I should take it back next year,” Anwar remarked wryly during the town hall session. He dismissed Abdul Hadi’s claims that his actions were an attempt to outshine Prophet Muhammad, calling them an example of “petty politics.”

Since taking office in November 2022, Anwar has rejected various remunerations, including allowances from his role as chairman of Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which he returned upon discovering he had received them.

Transparency Criticized in Travel Expense Disclosure

In a separate controversy, Anwar’s disclosure of cost-saving measures during overseas trips has drawn scrutiny. The prime minister defended the government’s strategy of involving corporate delegates, who cover their own expenses, in trade missions to reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.

“It’s a crazy era when those who plunder are glorified, and efforts to be clean and transparent are condemned,” Anwar said, lamenting the backlash. He highlighted the participation of companies like Proton, Petronas, and Top Glove, which bore their own travel costs while exploring investment opportunities abroad.

The government’s approach has cut public spending on travel by 75%, yet questions arose about the propriety of involving corporate representatives. Addressing concerns, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil clarified that private companies did not finance the government delegation. Anwar’s daughter, Nurul Izzah, also faced criticism for joining a delegation; however, Fahmi explained she participated in her official capacity with the Institute of Strategic and International Studies.

A Call for Constructive Dialogue

Anwar urged critics to move beyond baseless accusations and focus on constructive governance. “Criticism is fine, but offer solutions. Petty politics only hinders progress,” he said.

The prime minister emphasized his commitment to ethical leadership and cost-efficient governance, reaffirming his goal of fostering a clean and transparent administration despite resistance.
