In response to Datuk Awang Hashim's claimed false assertions that he is more spiteful than former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a court letter today requesting an apology and restitution from the PAS Pendang MP.

Anwar's attorneys claimed they have been given the go-ahead to file a lawsuit against Awang if he does not respond to this letter of demand in a satisfactory manner within three days.

Anwar's attorneys particularly cited Awang's comments to reporters yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat lobby on the same day in the letter of demand.

According to Malay Mail, the remarks were made in response to yesterday's bribery charges against Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the Tasek Gelugor MP for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

Anwar refuted Awang's claims that he was more vengeful than Dr. Mahathir, claiming they were unfounded, intentional defamations meant to damage his character.

In the same letter, Anwar's attorneys claimed that their client had never interfered with the Attorney General's Chambers' or investigative bodies' authority to conduct a selective investigation or prosecution, as had been claimed, and that he supported the independence of these institutions in order to promote good governance.

Anwar is requesting in the legal letter that Awang immediately retract his allegedly defamatory statements, offer an unreserved apology in a format that will be approved by Anwar's attorneys and published in media outlets that Anwar will select, and give a written undertaking or promise to not repeat the defamatory remarks. Anwar is also demanding that Awang pay for compensation and the associated legal fees.

The attorneys stated that the legal letter follows the customary process followed before defamation claims are launched and provided Awang with three days from the time she received the letter to react.

Malay Mail received confirmation from Anwar's attorney Datuk Sankara Nair that the letter had been posted and emailed to Awang.
