Anwar denies report of MACC chief's six-month contract extension

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted a Bloomberg report suggesting that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s contract will be extended for another six months.

Speaking to the media after Friday prayers, Anwar clarified that the matter had not yet been finalised. "I will announce it if a decision has been made, but his contract is not over yet," the Prime Minister stated.

Business news agency Bloomberg cited on Thursday that Anwar is expected to once again extend the term of Azam Baki’s position.

The news agency claimed, quoting familiar sources with the matter, that Azam’s tenure is set to be extended by another six months, following the expiration of his current term in May.

Azam Baki, who has been in office since March 2020, was granted a one-year extension on May 10, 2023, followed by another one-year extension the following year.

The speculation surrounding his contract continues as the government deliberates on the next step.– April 4, 2025
