MALAYSIA has reaffirmed its full support for the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describing the humanitarian convoy to Gaza as a “powerful stand against oppression” and a principled rejection of global injustice.
“The courageous actions of individuals participating in the flotilla to Gaza signify a powerful stand against oppression and the overwhelming solidarity with the people of Gaza,” Anwar said.
He added, “The involvement of international activists, including those from Malaysia, underscores the importance of collective global responsibility in challenging state-sponsored violence and terrorism, and advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people.”
Anwar urged that the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) be allowed to deliver its humanitarian cargo to Gaza without obstruction, stressing that any attempt to hinder the mission would only deepen the suffering of the Palestinian population.
According to his Senior Press Secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, Anwar views the mission as a vital act of international solidarity, echoing Malaysia’s longstanding commitment to justice and compassion under the Malaysia Madani framework.
“The Prime Minister emphasises that the government, along with all Malaysians, stands firmly behind this humanitarian effort, in line with the principles of solidarity and justice that underpin Malaysia Madani,” said Tunku Nashrul during the Prime Minister’s Office daily briefing.
He added, “The courage and perseverance of the activists entrusted with this mission are deeply appreciated, as they reflect the spirit of Malaysians who remain ever mindful of the suffering endured by our brothers and sisters in Gaza.”
Anwar, who serves as patron of the Sumud Nusantara initiative spearheading Malaysia’s involvement in the flotilla, is closely monitoring the progress of the Malaysian volunteers onboard.
Tunku Nashrul noted that the Prime Minister has called on the Malaysian public to continue offering their prayers and unwavering support for the mission, which is now entering the high-risk “yellow zone” — an area where threats from Israeli forces may intensify.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, involving participants from 45 countries across Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, is carrying essential food supplies, medical aid and a unified call for peace and the lifting of the Gaza blockade.
The fleet is expected to reach Gaza’s coastal waters later this week, but must first pass through the so-called “red zone” — widely considered the most dangerous part of the route — by late tomorrow evening.
As global attention turns to the flotilla’s final and most perilous stretch, Malaysia has reiterated its full diplomatic and moral support for the convoy, calling on all parties to respect its humanitarian mandate.
The flotilla, which includes over 50 small vessels from dozens of nations, is currently en route across the Mediterranean carrying food, medical supplies and calls for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor into the besieged territory.
A total of 34 Malaysian volunteers are taking part under the Sumud Nusantara coalition, led by Cinta Gaza Malaysia.
The area, situated between Cyprus and Italy, is considered high-risk due to potential Israeli military action. Tensions have escalated following comments by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has called for the flotilla activists to be labelled “terrorists” and detained, further heightening global scrutiny of Israel’s blockade.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s condemnation of the ongoing occupation and “settler colonialism” in Palestine, stating: “Our commitment to justice transcends national boundaries, reinforcing the idea that solidarity in social movements is essential.”
He also criticised the global silence on systemic injustices, asserting that international dialogue on social security must reflect current realities.
“As we address social security on a global scale, we must confront systemic injustices, as silence on such atrocities renders any discussion of social security hollow and inadequate,” he said.
Anwar called on Malaysians to continue offering their prayers and support for the flotilla’s safe passage, describing the mission as “noble” and aligned with Malaysia’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian causes. - September 30, 2025
