A veteran Malaysian journalist has delivered a stark critique of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, suggesting that the current national leader no longer carries the charisma, conviction, or commanding presence that once defined his political rise. In a reflection shared publicly, longstanding media figure Kalimullah Hassan conveyed that Anwar’s words today feel hollow and unable to energize a nation already weary from decades of political turbulence.
Kalimullah’s commentary places Anwar within the broader context of Malaysia’s long and painful political trajectory. He recalled how hopes for reform had eroded over years marked by constitutional stand-offs, royal disputes, entrenched corruption scandals, trafficking concerns, and structural weaknesses in governance. These accumulated failures, in his view, have worn down Malaysia’s integrity and intellectual depth—conditions that have only magnified the sense of national drift.
Reflecting on the younger Anwar, Kalimullah described an era when the then–rising leader captivated audiences with confidence and clarity. He remembered moments when Anwar stood beside global figures and spoke with a force that resonated with Malaysians who believed the country was marching toward a brighter future. That period, he suggested, coincided with decisive nation-building moves under past leadership and a widespread feeling that Malaysia had the momentum to grow and modernize.
Those days, he implied, have faded. Where people once saw a compelling reformist, he now sees a leader whose energy has diminished and whose speeches no longer inspire trust or excitement. The veteran journalist painted Anwar as a symbol of Malaysia’s stagnation—someone whose message no longer aligns with the urgency of current national challenges. Drawing on historical philosophy, he likened the prime minister to a ruler who speaks well but struggles to transform rhetoric into concrete results.
His criticism extended beyond Anwar alone. Kalimullah argued that the greater dilemma lies in the succession landscape, which he believes is populated mostly by aging, compromised, or ineffective political figures. This, he warned, reflects a deeper crisis for Malaysia, where the future appears constrained by limited leadership alternatives and a political class remaining heavily reliant on veteran personalities.
