Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted the role of the halal industry in advancing the Islamic economy. He described it as not only inclusive and comprehensive but also capable of having a far-reaching positive impact on the broader community. This vision was shared during the launch of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2024, where he outlined the various ways in which the halal sector could complement Malaysia's Islamic economy.

Anwar explained that the halal industry involves multiple layers of society, from farmers and fishermen to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and extends to retailers. Its reach across various sectors ensures that a wide swath of the population is actively engaged in the economy. "To achieve the objectives of the MADANI Economy and the principles of Maqasid Shariah, it must involve almost the entire population," Anwar stated, emphasizing that halal goes beyond being a religious obligation, it serves as a vital instrument for sustainable economic growth.

He also pointed out that the growing global interest in the halal industry presents substantial opportunities for Malaysia. In his recent meetings with foreign leaders, Anwar observed strong support for the halal sector, with several nations keen on collaborating with Malaysia. These leaders have not only recognised Malaysia's leading role in promoting halal products but are also eager to explore trade and investment opportunities in halal-related industries, which include food, cosmetics, and other consumer goods.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment by MATRADE and the government, as it allows us to further explore the importance of halal and the reasons Islam emphasizes its significance across various industries," Anwar stated, underscoring Malaysia's important role in promoting halal in the globalised world.

In honour of the industry’s pioneers, Anwar presented the Special National Halal Development Excellence Award to former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for his exceptional contributions to the sector. The award, accepted by Abdullah’s son, Tan Sri Kamaluddin Abdullah, highlights the enduring legacy of Abdullah’s tenure, which saw the launch of MIHAS in 2004 and the establishment of the Halal Development Corporation in 2006.

MIHAS 2024, themed 'Globalising Halal Innovations', is a four-day event organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The showcase aims to bring together industry players and innovators from around the world to expand the global halal economy.

With its comprehensive framework, the halal industry is positioned to become an indispensable part of the Islamic economy, fostering growth, innovation, and collaboration across the globe. Through platforms like MIHAS, Malaysia continues to assert its leadership in driving the future of halal innovation, benefitting both its local economy and international partners.
