Anwar holds high-level engagements in Moscow to deepen strategic ties

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim continued the second day of his official visit to Russia with a series of high-level engagements aimed at bolstering trade relations and advancing strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Moscow.

Anwar began the day with a roundtable session at the Metropol Hotel, attended by representatives from 24 major Russian companies and two business councils. The discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as agriculture, technology, logistics, manufacturing, and financial services.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by five cabinet ministers, including Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Following the business roundtable, Bernama cited, Anwar was scheduled to meet Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at the House of Government to explore initiatives related to trade facilitation, education, and broader economic cooperation.

Later in the day, the Malaysian delegation, which also includes Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, was due at the Grand Kremlin Palace for a key meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Talks with the Russian President were expected to cover areas such as technology exchange, energy and food security, higher education, the halal economy, and multilateral collaboration—including Malaysia’s prospective role in BRICS and the Global South.

To close the day’s programme, Anwar was also scheduled to meet the Grand Mufti of Russia, Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, who chairs the Russian Council of Muftis. The meeting underscores Malaysia’s continued commitment to strengthening ties with global Islamic institutions. - May 14, 2025
