Renowned US broadcaster and political commentator Mehdi Hasan has hailed Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his outspoken support of Palestine, stating, “the world needs more leaders like Anwar.” His remarks highlight Anwar's courageous stance on universal values amidst ongoing conflicts.

During his visit to Malaysia for the National Human Capital Conference & Exhibition (NHCCE), Hasan commended Anwar’s strong advocacy for Palestinian rights, particularly noting the prime minister's impactful meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in March. At this meeting, both leaders called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the immediate release of hostages, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid for Palestinians.

Hasan praised Anwar's readiness to address sensitive topics, recalling how the prime minister boldly spoke out about the oppression faced by Palestinians while sitting next to Scholz, who is known for his pro-Israel stance. “It was a very awkward moment for Scholz,” Hasan remarked. He expressed admiration for Anwar’s willingness to confront uncomfortable truths in high-profile settings, asserting that such leadership is crucial in today’s global landscape.

In a press conference alongside Scholz, Anwar articulated Malaysia's position against “colonialism, apartheid, or ethnic cleansing,” not just in Gaza but in any context, including the situation in Ukraine. His critique of Western nations' inaction regarding Israeli actions in Gaza has resonated with international audiences, garnering support from various global figures.

Following an exclusive interview with Anwar, Hasan’s appreciation for the prime minister grew further. He highlighted Malaysia’s potential to project moral authority on the world stage and suggested that Anwar could play a pivotal role in mediating the Palestine conflict. “He has spoken to all factions on the Palestinian side, and Hamas has indicated they are open to a peaceful settlement,” Hasan revealed.

The commentator posited that Anwar could potentially serve as a broker or negotiator in the Middle East, where many past efforts have faltered. “We could do with some fresh faces in the Middle East, as those who have been negotiating thus far have often failed miserably,” Hasan stated.

Hasan, an outspoken critic of Israeli policies and a co-founder of media company Zeteo, has frequently addressed issues surrounding Israel's actions. He expressed concern about the ongoing conflict and its implications for the Palestinian people, noting that Israel seems to be disregarding international protests and concerns.
