Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the importance of implementing measures that enhance the ease of doing business to bolster the agricultural sector's business ecosystem.

During the Cabinet Committee Meeting on the Nation’s Food Security Policy on June 13, Anwar emphasized the urgent need to address pivotal issues such as the approval and facilitation of investments and business operations. He reiterated the government's dedication to nurturing the plant industry ecosystem, integrating advanced technology, and exploring innovative food sources like cultured meat and cell-based foods.

“These initiatives must be preceded by comprehensive studies to ensure that food quality and safety are upheld,” he noted.

Anwar highlighted that modernizing agriculture through the development of plant factories will significantly advance the agricultural technology sector, offering sustainable food alternatives to traditional crop production. This modernization, he asserted, is essential for creating a resilient and technologically driven agricultural industry.

The Prime Minister shared that the meeting had discussed the positive outcomes of enhanced performance and productivity in the agricultural and agro-food sectors, reflecting growth over the past year. He stressed the importance of this growth in reinforcing the nation's food security.

The meeting also focused on establishing robust food security indicators, which would include detailed information on food prices and availability at all levels. This initiative aims to provide a clearer picture of the food security landscape and facilitate better planning and response strategies.

Anwar expressed his confidence in the decisions made during the meeting, stating that these measures would further accelerate the development of the agricultural and agro-food sectors. He highlighted the critical role these sectors play in the national economy and their ongoing benefits to the citizens.

In addition to addressing immediate needs, Anwar emphasized the importance of long-term strategies. He called for the integration of advanced technologies and innovative practices to enhance efficiency and productivity. The Prime Minister mentioned the potential of cultured meat and cell-based foods as future food sources, noting that these alternatives could significantly contribute to food security if implemented correctly.

He stressed the necessity of conducting thorough studies to ensure the safety and quality of these new food sources. Anwar pointed out that these innovations could revolutionize the food industry by providing sustainable and reliable alternatives to traditional food sources, thereby enhancing food security.

Furthermore, Anwar highlighted the significance of modern agricultural practices such as plant factories. These practices, he said, could lead to more sustainable and efficient food production methods, ultimately supporting the nation's goal of achieving greater food security.

The Prime Minister concluded by expressing his optimism that the decisions made at the meeting would have a lasting positive impact on the agricultural and agro-food sectors. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting these sectors, which are vital to the national economy and the well-being of the citizens.

Anwar's address underscores the government's proactive stance in ensuring food security through innovative and sustainable agricultural practices. The emphasis on ease of doing business, technological integration, and the exploration of new food sources illustrates a comprehensive approach to strengthening the agricultural sector and securing the nation's food future.
