In a significant address aimed at addressing longstanding inequalities, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed to intensify efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide in Sarawak. Speaking to a crowd in Kapit town on September 29, 2024, Anwar highlighted the pressing need for improved infrastructure and amenities in rural areas, where living standards remain starkly lower than in urban centers.

Anwar emphasized that the state of basic amenities, including roads and bridges, is often inadequate, making travel and transportation a considerable challenge for residents of rural Sarawak. “Travelling in rural Sarawak is still difficult due to the poor conditions of roads and bridges,” he noted. He acknowledged the complexity of navigating the vast and varied landscape, where river travel can also be fraught with difficulties.

The Prime Minister's remarks come as part of a broader commitment to ensure that the needs of the rural population are prioritized in federal planning and budgeting. “I have discussed these issues with the Works Minister, and it is clear that the Federal Government is deeply concerned about the welfare of rural communities,” Anwar stated, reinforcing the government's dedication to improving living conditions.

A cornerstone of this commitment is the RM16 billion investment in the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway, a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity across Sarawak. This highway is expected to significantly improve access to remote areas, facilitating trade and easing transportation for residents. Anwar further highlighted that, in recognition of the unique challenges faced by Sarawak’s rural population, tolls on this highway have been waived.

In addition to infrastructure investments, Anwar assured that billions of ringgit would continue to flow into Sarawak and Sabah annually to meet the needs of the people. This financial commitment is part of a larger strategy to ensure that federal resources are allocated equitably, addressing the specific needs of rural residents who have historically been underserved.

The Prime Minister's pledge comes at a time when calls for equitable development are becoming increasingly prominent in Malaysian society. Many citizens, especially in rural areas, have expressed frustration over the persistent disparities in access to quality services and infrastructure compared to urban populations. Anwar's administration appears to be responding to these concerns, aiming to create a more balanced development approach.
