Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is eager to accelerate the approval process for the expansion of the Penang International Airport (PIA), citing the airport's congestion issues. During his address at the Penang Strengthening Connectivity and Entrepreneurial Development Carnival at Politeknik Seberang Prai, Anwar highlighted the government's approval of the state's application for the PIA expansion.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the timeline provided by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who indicated that the expansion project would commence only at the end of the year, Anwar pledged to raise the matter in the upcoming Cabinet meeting to expedite funding for the project. Given that the expansion is expected to take two to three years to complete, Anwar emphasized the urgency of securing funding to ensure the project's timely commencement.

Last October, Transport Minister Anthony Loke disclosed that the government had allocated RM93 million for land acquisition and infrastructure development related to the PIA expansion. Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is currently evaluating the capital and financial requirements for the project, which is slated to begin in September and span 48 months, ultimately increasing the airport's annual capacity from 6.5 million to 12 million passengers.

Additionally, Anwar stressed the importance of enhancing digital literacy, particularly among the lower-income demographic, to bridge the gap between different socio-economic groups. In a bid to monitor and improve the effectiveness of government programs, Anwar instructed department heads to submit monthly reports on program implementation. He cited the carnival as an example, expecting a comprehensive report by early March or April at the latest to assess its impact and effectiveness.

Anwar emphasized that raising digital literacy is crucial for the success of various government initiatives. He highlighted the need for monthly reports on program implementation to gauge effectiveness and ensure that resources are utilized efficiently.

Addressing the crowd, Anwar stressed the importance of digital literacy in today's world. He emphasized that closing the gap between the elites and the poor requires improving access to digital technologies and ensuring that people have the skills to use them effectively.

Anwar also highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in government programs. He urged department heads to provide regular reports on program implementation to assess their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.

In conclusion, Anwar's call for swift approval of the PIA expansion and his emphasis on raising digital literacy reflect his commitment to improving infrastructure and empowering people through technology. His focus on accountability and transparency underscores the government's commitment to delivering results for the people.
