Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that the recent decision by the Federal Court to annul 16 provisions in the Kelantan Shariah Criminal Code is entirely independent of the Unity Government's influence. Emphasizing the court's authority under the Federal Constitution, he explained that the ruling does not implicate the Syariah Court or state powers. Anwar made these remarks during the Melaka civil servants assembly, attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The Federal Court's 8-1 majority decision, led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, nullified 16 provisions in the Kelantan Shariah Criminal Code Enactment 2019. This landmark ruling stemmed from an application by Kelantanese individuals, challenging the constitutionality and legality of certain provisions.

Anwar addressed accusations from the opposition, asserting that the legal challenge was initiated during the previous administration's tenure. He highlighted that the challenge originated from Kelantanese individuals and was brought before the Federal Court, not influenced by the Prime Minister or the Cabinet. Anwar criticized attempts to politicize the issue, emphasizing its legal nature.

In response to concerns over Shariah law jurisdiction, Anwar highlighted the establishment of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI), chaired by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor. He underscored MKI's role in examining Shariah law implementation across states, addressing a previously unaddressed aspect at the national level.

Regarding the reduction of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's sentence, Anwar clarified that the Unity Government played no part in the decision. He refuted allegations implicating the Prime Minister and Cabinet, stating that the decision was made independently by the Pardons Board.

In conclusion, Anwar reiterated the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring impartiality in legal proceedings. He emphasized the importance of respecting judicial independence and refraining from politicizing legal matters.
