Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that he will be part of the Pardons Board panel that will decide on former premier Najib Razak's request for a royal pardon.

Najib, who is serving a 12-year jail term for corruption, has applied for a royal pardon from Malaysia's king, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The Pardons Board is a five-member panel that is appointed by the king. The other members of the panel are the chief justice, the attorney general, the minister in the prime minister's department in charge of law and order, and a representative from the royal household.

Anwar said that he will be impartial in his decision-making and that he will only consider the facts of the case.

"I will not be influenced by any political considerations," he said. "I will only consider the law and the evidence."

Anwar's decision to be part of the Pardons Board panel has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have welcomed his decision, saying that he is a fair and impartial judge. Others have criticized his decision, saying that he is biased against Najib.

Najib's supporters have called on Anwar to recuse himself from the panel, saying that he cannot be impartial because he is a political rival of Najib.

Anwar has rejected these calls, saying that he is confident that he can be impartial.

"I am a man of principle," he said. "I will not let my personal feelings or political affiliations influence my decision-making."

The Pardons Board is expected to make its decision on Najib's request in the coming weeks.

What is the Pardons Board?

The Pardons Board is a five-member panel that is appointed by the king of Malaysia. The panel is responsible for considering applications for royal pardons.

Royal pardons are a form of clemency that can be granted by the king. They can be granted for a variety of reasons, including humanitarian reasons, or to correct a miscarriage of justice.

What are the factors that the Pardons Board will consider?

The Pardons Board will consider a number of factors when making its decision on Najib's request for a royal pardon. These factors include:

  • The nature of the crime that Najib was convicted of
  • The severity of the sentence that Najib was given
  • Najib's conduct in prison
  • Any mitigating factors that may exist in Najib's case

What is the likelihood that Najib will be granted a royal pardon?

It is difficult to say with certainty whether or not Najib will be granted a royal pardon. The Pardons Board will consider all of the factors mentioned above when making its decision.

However, it is worth noting that the Pardons Board has granted royal pardons in the past. In 2018, the Pardons Board granted a royal pardon to Anwar Ibrahim, who had been convicted of sodomy and sentenced to five years in prison.

What will happen if Najib is granted a royal pardon?

If Najib is granted a royal pardon, he will be released from prison immediately. He will also be able to resume his political career.

What will happen if Najib is not granted a royal pardon?

If Najib is not granted a royal pardon, he will remain in prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
