Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that strengthening the national social insurance framework extends beyond employment to include the comprehensive development of individuals and the nation. This statement was made during the Malaysian Social Protection Council (MySPC) meeting, which he chaired today. Anwar stated that this initiative aims to transition from welfare-based social assistance to risk protection aligned with the life cycle of Malaysians.
He expressed confidence that, with God's will, the country's social safety net can be continually strengthened and expanded to benefit those entitled to it. This assurance was shared in a Facebook post this evening.
During the MySPC meeting, discussions centred on strategies to enhance social insurance programs as Malaysia braces for the challenges of becoming an ageing nation. By 2030, Malaysia is expected to transition into an aged nation, which could expose a significant portion of the population, particularly the elderly, to various risks.
Anwar highlighted several critical issues, including poverty, health and medical problems, insufficient retirement savings, and decreased labour productivity. These issues, he noted, could have severe implications for the nation's fiscal health.
In a separate post, Anwar mentioned receiving a courtesy visit from the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) delegation, led by its president, Norsyahrin Hamidon. During this meeting, he underscored that Bumiputera's business interests should be grounded in genuine entrepreneurial principles. Anwar also took the opportunity to listen to the challenges and current issues faced by Malay entrepreneurs.
He assured that these concerns would be carefully examined to develop solutions for fundamental issues. Anwar acknowledged DPMM's longstanding commitment since its establishment in 1938 to advocating for the economic welfare and dignity of the Malay and Bumiputera communities. He noted that DPMM has grown robustly, now boasting nearly one million members through 15 branches and several affiliates.
Anwar's remarks underscore the government's commitment to enhancing social protection and supporting entrepreneurial growth, aiming to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all Malaysians.
