UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) have been urged to immediately reconsider their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Unity Government, following an open letter addressed to UMNO President and BN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi by Bukit Damansara UMNO branch member Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim. His message, framed as a warning rooted in the party’s constitution and national interest, signals rising tensions within the coalition as political dynamics continue shifting nationwide.
Zaid explained that his call was not shaped by personal sentiment but by what he described as a clear reading of UMNO’s foundational principles, the party’s long-term survival, and Malaysia’s broader geopolitical direction. After observing recent developments, he argued that UMNO’s continued partnership in the Unity Government has become detrimental both electorally and strategically.
His letter claimed that the Unity Government’s handling of several key issues, including international negotiations, had cast doubts on its ability to safeguard national sovereignty. He pointed to declining support from the Chinese community and described the administration’s approach to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as weak, contending that negotiations had allegedly overlooked the Federation’s wider interests.
Zaid warned that UMNO-BN could face severe losses in the 16th General Election (GE16) if it remained aligned with Anwar, with early signs already visible ahead of the Melaka and Johor state polls. He also expressed concern over what he described as interference in judicial processes and the alleged use of enforcement agencies for political purposes. In his view, these trends have undermined the government’s legal reform agenda while further eroding public trust.
The former minister also argued that the government had failed to protect Bumiputera interests during trade discussions with the United States and suggested that Malaysia’s geopolitical position had weakened due to what he characterised as excessive alignment with Washington. Based on these factors, he asserted that several policy directions of the Unity Government conflicted directly with Clause 3 of the UMNO Constitution—particularly those involving national sovereignty and the economic advancement of Malays and Bumiputera communities.
Zaid maintained that Anwar had become a political liability not only to UMNO and BN but to the nation as a whole. He emphasised that entrusting UMNO’s future to a leader who, in his view, has lost the confidence of significant voter segments would endanger the party’s prospects in the next election. Concluding his letter, he appealed for UMNO and BN to withdraw support from the Unity Government, describing such a move as essential for restoring Malay voter confidence and repositioning the party ahead of GE16.
